BGI Group signed three Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) in the lead up to the G20 Summit in Bali with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the University of Indonesia and the Del Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Del). The MOUs cover genomics development initiatives, construction of related laboratories, and joint research and personnel training.
The signings were witnessed by Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs of Indonesia, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and Chairman and Co-Founder of BGI Group, Wang Jian.
Wang Jian also spoke during the "Tri Hita Karana (THK) Future Knowledge Summit" in Bali, an official side event of the G20 Summit, where he delivered a speech on the development of cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell sequencing and spatiotemporal omics, and their impact on precision medicine, public health, and next-generation agricultural tools.
Genomics was announced as an integral part of the Indonesian Ministry of Health's medical transformation strategy. On August 14th 2022, Indonesia established its first national integrated biomedical programme, the "Biomedical and Genome Science Initiative" (BGSi).
