AI reality vs. myth: Twelve predictions from SAS for 2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. And stories are rampant about its promise and its threat. Will AI's potential be realized in the year ahead? Generative AI will augment (not replace) a comprehensive AI strategy
"Generative AI technology does a lot of things, but it can't do everything. In 2024, organizations will pivot from viewing generative AI as a stand-alone technology to integrating it as a complement to industry-specific AI strategies. In banking, simulated data for stress testing and scenario analysis will help predict risks and prevent losses. In health care, that means the generation of individualized treatment plans. In manufacturing, generative AI can simulate production to identify improvements in quality, reliability, maintenance, energy efficiency and yield."

AI will create jobs
"In 2023, there was a lot of worry about the jobs that AI might eliminate. The conversation in 2024 will focus instead on the jobs AI will create. An obvious example is prompt engineering, which links a model's potential with its real-world application. AI helps workers at all skill levels and roles to be more effective and efficient. And while new AI technologies in 2024 and beyond may cause some short-term disruptions in the job market, they will spark many new jobs and new roles that will help drive economic growth."

Insurers will confront climate risk, aided by AI

Casio to Release MR-G with Iconic Form and Comfortable Dura Soft Band

 Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today the release of a new addition to the MR-G line, the flagship of the G-SHOCK brand of shock-resistant watches. The new MRG-B5000R inherits the iconic shape of the very first G-SHOCK — representing the brand's point of origin — and features a highly comfortable Dura Soft band.

Based on the concept of delivering "the ultimate in toughness-driven watches," the MR-G line sits at the pinnacle of the G-SHOCK brand, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and master metalworking techniques. Inheriting the iconic form of the original G-SHOCK, the original MRG-B5000 was released in 2022. Featuring a bezel with the Multi-Guard Structure to enable precision polishing, the watch employed cutting-edge materials including COBARION^(R), a super-hard alloy, finished with master polishing craftsmanship. With features such as these, it has proven very popular as the flagship model of the G-SHOCK brand.

The new MRG-B5000R builds on the MRG-B5000, employing a soft, comfortable Dura Soft band to offer flexible ease of use befitting the flagship line of the G-SHOCK brand and deliver suitability for both formal occasions and active situations. The Dura Soft band offers strong resistance to discoloration, staining, and deterioration over time, while insert-molding of titanium components also enhances the strength of the band's connection to the case. Atlas Renewable Energy, international developer and one of the largest and fastest-growing independent power producers (IPP) in Latin America, secured a USD447.8 million (equivalent to R$2,18 billion) loan from the Brazilian development bank (BNDES), the bank's largest renewable energy US Dollar loan to date, to build the Vista Alegre Solar Plant. Vista Alegre, the largest solar project to be built in a single phase in Brazil, will supply electricity to Albras for 21 years through a power purchase agreement (PPA). The financing marks the second collaboration between the BNDES and Atlas, following the successful financing of the Boa Sorte Solar Power Plant (438 MWp), another joint venture with Albras, which will also supply clean energy for aluminum production. Vista Alegre allows Atlas to continue positioning itself as a leader in US dollar PPAs for large energy consumers in Brazil. Construction began in 2023 and the project is set to start supplying clean energy to Albras by 2025.

The solar project, which will generate more than 2,500 jobs during its construction phase, will continue to promote best-in-class ESG practices through strong project execution to provide long-term benefits to the surrounding communities during the construction and operation phases. Atlas will implement its flagship social program, 'We are all part of the same energy,' to promote diversity and inclusion in the construction of its renewable energy projects by upskilling local women to increase their participation to at least 15%. Atlas will also implement its award-winning Ed-Mundo program, which aims to train young students in programming, IT, robotics and entrepreneurship in underprivileged communities. The program enables students to become protagonists of social transformation by generating work opportunities and other sources of income for their communities.

XCMG Future Creator: XCMG Apprentice Season 8 Brings Focus to Intelligent Manufacturing and Green Equipment

Themed "XCMG Future Creator," the eighth season of XCMG Machinery's (SHE:000425) international talent development program XCMG Apprentice has successfully wrapped up a one-week workshop at XCMG's headquarters in Xuzhou. Six machinery equipment operators, coming from Brazil, Uzbekistan and other countries, visited XCMG's intelligent manufacturing (IM) factory, operated a selection of green and intelligent equipment, including excavators, cranes, and port machines.

During the workshop, XCMG's experts and senior staff led the apprentices to explore the group's achievements in IM, high-end product development, R&D, and global marketing.

XCMG demonstrated the IM capabilities of its loading machines with a focus on intelligence and sustainability. The apprentices not only learned about the pure electric products, toured the IM factory, and also test drove and operated the equipment, including the unmanned loader XC918-EV, remote control loader XC958, super-high-power mining grader GR5505, and skid steer loader XC7-SR07E through an S-turn.

At the heavy equipment division, the apprentices experienced the world's largest all-terrain crane, theXCA3000,and remotely operated the unmanned XCA160L8 crane, which excels in maneuverability and reliability. The apprentices also visited the Ma'anshan Yangtze River Bridge, which adopts the XGT15000-600S tower crane that tackles over 60 core technologies and 20 worldwide technical problems to guarantee superior performance for mega-scale construction.

The apprentices also operated AGVs developed for ports, tried shooting balls into baskets by driving a telescopic boom forklift, and tested several new energy and unmanned trucks for mining, concrete, and more.

At the IM factory, the apprentices explored various production lines and workshops equipped with leading intelligent technologies. The port machinery factory showed the 80 production processes, an automatic welding machine, an intelligent tire bolt tightening machine, and more. While at China's most intelligent heavy truck factory, the apprentices learned about the latest IM technologies, including intelligent coating inspection, robots for automatic punching and welding, AGVs, and more.

Before the one-week workshop in Xuzhou, XCMG Apprentice Season 8 hosted a series of on-site trainings and experience events themed "Dream Mechanical Life" in Brazil, Poland, India, Uzbekistan, and China.

Xinhua Silk Road: Museum showcasing culture of China's largest prehistoric stone city opens to public

A museum dedicated to the culture of Shimao, which is an archaeological site with a stone-built city dating back approximately 4,000 years, opened to the public on Wednesday, showing the important value and unique position of Shimao culture in the origin of the Chinese civilization.

The Shimao museum, located in Shenmu City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, covers an area of 12,890 square meters. It showcases a collection of 688 pieces or sets of artifacts unearthed at the Shimao site and those related to Shimao culture, including jade, stoneware, pottery, bone tools and colorful murals, in an exhibition area of 5,943 square meters.

Spanning about 4.2 million square meters, the Shimao site is dubbed China's largest prehistoric stone city ever discovered.

Since a systematic archaeological survey in 2012, remarkable discoveries including remains of house foundations in orderly rows and high-level burial grounds have been unearthed. The relics then become an important part for the study of early Chinese civilization.
