UnionPay Showcases at the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo

On September 17, the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo opened in Nanning, Guangxi. Dong Junfeng, Chairman of China UnionPay and UnionPay International, attended the event and participated in the China-ASEAN Financial Cooperation and Development Forum.

Centering on the development of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 and marking the fifth anniversary of the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, this year's expo focused on deepening the integration of artificial intelligence and the real economy. UnionPay leverages AI technology and connectivity to enhance the effectiveness of China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation and drive the high-quality development of the digital ecosystem.

Driving AI - Powered Real Economy to Build New Advantages for ASEAN Digital and Intelligent Finance

Based on Guangxi's position as a gateway to the ASEAN region, UnionPay is building an "AI + finance" innovation hub characterized by integrations in Guangxi, service delivery to ASEAN, and wider reach across the Asia-Pacific. Collaborations in progress include the development of ASEAN-oriented financial corpora for AI training, the assessment and testing of the China-ASEAN financial AI service sharing network, and the co-creation of Guangxi's alliance for combating telecom fraud.

Powered by the AI-driven risk control system that it has developed in-house, UnionPay continues to strengthen cross-border risk governance. The Out-of-Band (OOB) enhanced authentication implementation has seen the fraud rate of pilot banks drop by 90% against pre-deployment levels. UnionPay is also collaborating with overseas terminal manufacturers to roll out intelligent upgrades on their devices, effectively preventing cross-border payment risks and making cross-border financial services easier to use and more secure.

Echoing the expo's highlights, the UnionPay exhibition area also featured immersive experience zones for intelligent in-vehicle systems and smart glasses, showing how the Agentic Payment Open Protocol (APOP) framework enables the end-to-end integration of services and AI-powered payment in multiple use cases. The presentations demonstrated the efficacy of the financial AI product cycle that starts with R&D in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, integration in Guangxi, and eventually ends with application in the ASEAN nations. They also showcased AI's innovative value in powering the real economy and upgrading the financial sector.

Connecting Cross - Border Payment Rails to Drive Regional Economic and Trade Integration

This year's expo also featured a area for matching supply and demand in AI-powered procurement. Focusing on the three themes of "Procurement in China," "Export to China," and "Investment in China," UnionPay continues to refine its payment service system for ASEAN by strengthening the infrastructure for economic and trade connectivity.

UnionPay's acceptance network has expanded to ten ASEAN countries, covering over 38 million QR merchants in the region. Contactless payment acceptance at POS terminals and ATMs, as well as local card issuance, is also available extensively in these markets. In multiple ASEAN countries, UnionPay is creating benchmarks for cross-border connectivity under the government-to-government cooperation model. A prime example is the China-Indonesia QR payment linkage that went live this past June, bringing the number of UnionPay's overseas QR merchants to over 46 million. The interoperability of payment network standards and the integration of the systems involved have also been completed with many other ASEAN members. For example, the cooperation between China and Vietnam is accelerating. An integration of systems has ensured standards harmonization, allowing Chinese consumers to use their wallets in Vietnam, while work is underway to enable the acceptance of Vietnam-based wallets in China.

Building on retail payment connectivity, UnionPay continues to broaden its service offerings. To meet the needs arising from the cross-border expansion of enterprises and industrial chains, UnionPay leverages its self-developed integrated information service platform for cross-border B2B transactions to create digital payment solutions for emerging business models, such as cross-border e-commerce and flight and hotel services, empowering industry partners in the process.

Upgrading Cross - Border Consumer Services to Unlock Potential for New Use Cases of AI - Powered Purchasing

This year's expo placed a strong focus on the upgrade of everyday consumption. A first-ever "AI product marketplace" was set up that promoted cross-border AI-driven consumer purchasing. Addressing the various needs of business people and consumers visiting China during their travel cycles, which ranges from transport, shopping to the final departure from the country, UnionPay has launched the Nihao China App, an all-in-one platform of intelligent and digital cross-border services. The solution targeted the above needs of the ASEAN businesses and consumers during the expo. Supporting easy sign-up with international mobile numbers and email addresses, the Nihao China App allows users to pay via Chinese QR codes without needing to link a Chinese bank card. The app provides multilingual assistance across high-frequency use cases in 27 languages, such as cross-border shopping, cultural tourism, transit, and everyday purchases. The app also facilitates departure tax refunds by streamlining the process for travelers, closing the payment loop with an intelligent, all-inclusive service.

Yantai College Explores New Approaches to Taking Vocational Education Global

 Yantai Vocational College

In August, Yantai Vocational College sent two faculty members, Zhao Yuhu and Wang Guangyi, to KWT Technical College and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in Malaysia for a 15-day training program for instructors in new energy vehicle (NEV) technology. Drawing on the college's achievements in developing its NEV program under the national "Double High-Level" initiative and its industry-academia partnership with the BYD Industrial College, the program provided faculty from local universities and vocational institutions with systematic training in the three core NEV technologies, namely batteries, electric motors, and electronic control systems. It also introduced China's NEV curriculum framework and hands-on training model, marking a concrete step in the college's efforts to take vocational education overseas and support international industrial cooperation.

"We had previously come to China for short-term training programs, but this marks the first time we have learned from experts with both hands-on industry experience and expertise in vocational education," said Mohd Haidzir, a participating instructor, who found the program highly rewarding. Adopting a "China-Malaysia Dual-Track" model, the training integrated theoretical instruction, curriculum demonstrations, hands-on vehicle operation, and thematic seminars. This approach not only enabled Malaysian instructors to gain a systematic understanding of core NEV technologies while also translating the college's professional standards, curriculum standards and talent-training standards for NEV programs into concrete teaching and training practices. In doing so, the program brought China's NEV technologies and vocational education expertise to Malaysia and explored an approach to international cooperation centered on technical training, strengthened by industry-academia collaboration and grounded in competency development.

This initiative has opened up a new avenue for cooperation between China and Malaysia in vocational education and industry, providing a practical example of how Chinese vocational colleges can share their expertise and training models internationally.

The 8th APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting Held in Nanjing, "Investing in People" Becomes a Shared Action Across Asia-Pacific

The 8th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting

The 8th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, on Sept. 21. The meeting adopted the Joint Statement of the 8th APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting (Nanjing Statement), with participants agreeing to work together to modernize human resources development and contribute to building a stronger Asia-Pacific community. The statement put forward six policy recommendations on employment and called on APEC economies to strengthen lifelong vocational skills training systems, making "investing in people" a shared action across the Asia-Pacific region.

Why was Nanjing chosen to host such a high-level multilateral meeting? The ancient capital, with a history spanning six dynasties, has made "investing in people" part of everyday life. Nanjing is home to 54 universities and 103 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The city has also entered the global top 100 for science and technology talent competitiveness. In its latest talent policies released this year, Nanjing expanded support to workers in emerging forms of employment, including food delivery riders and livestreaming hosts. From leading scientists to frontline workers, the city is creating opportunities for people from all walks of life to realize their potential.

Austrian entrepreneur Vitaly Ignatovich visited several Chinese cities before choosing Nanjing as the place to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions. The city's solid technological foundation, vibrant entrepreneurial environment and vast Chinese market, he said, have made the development of new products "twice as effective with half the effort."

Nanjing is demonstrating how talent and the city can grow and thrive together, sending a clear message to the Asia-Pacific: it is not only a place where talent can put down roots, but also a hub where innovation is transformed into practical outcomes and international cooperation comes together.

The adoption of the Nanjing Statement is not an end in itself. Through the meeting, Nanjing looks forward to forging stronger ties with innovators and entrepreneurs from around the world, creating opportunities for mutual growth and success.

2026 China International Woodball Open kicks off in Lianshui, Jiangsu

The 2026 China International Woodball Open Organizing Committee

The 2026 China International Woodball Open kicked off on Sept. 20 in Baotan Subdistrict, Lianshui County, Jiangsu Province. More than 50 teams and over 400 athletes from across China are competing, with the event running through Sept. 22.

The three-day event features two main events - stroke play and fairway competition - and two divisions: Open and Evergreen. In stroke play, the top 30 male and female individual finishers in the Open and Evergreen divisions will accumulate ranking points in accordance with the International Woodball Tour points system.

During the event, the organizing committee has set up more than 20 specialty exhibition and sales booths around the venue, showcasing intangible cultural heritage products, local specialties, distinctive cultural and creative products, and agricultural and sideline products. The event is also intended to serve as a platform to boost local cultural tourism consumption.

Woodball combines competitiveness with mass appeal and has been gradually promoted in China in recent years. It is understood that Lianshui County hosted the National Woodball Championships in 2025 and is hosting the 2026 China International Woodball Open. The local area has used idle tidal flat resources to build woodball venues and has hosted national-level woodball events for consecutive years, promoting the integrated development of national fitness, culture, sports, commerce and tourism. With the event as a bridge, Lianshui is continuing to deepen the integration of sports with education and tourism, amplify the pulling effect of branded events, and promote the popularization and deep-rooted development of woodball locally.

World Off-Track on Nearly Every Food System Goal - Latest Assessment Reveals

 The Food Systems Countdown Initiative

The 2026 Food Systems Countdown analysis reveals that progress is too slow and insufficient to meet 2030 goals, but 2050 could still be achievable, provided actions are consistent and accelerated.

The latest study from the Food Systems Countdown Initiative (FSCI) reveals the stark reality of where global food systems transformation stands - for most indicators on health, environment, livelihoods, governance and resilience, a vast majority of countries will not meet the internationally agreed 2030 goals. And for some indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions from food systems, no country in the world is projected to meet the target.

The study, published in Nature Food , represents the most comprehensive performance assessment of food systems to date, covering 197 countries and 44 indicators across five themes: diets, nutrition and health; environment, natural resources and production; livelihoods, poverty and equity; governance; and resilience. And for the first time, the study goes beyond tracking trends to assess progress and measure how food systems are actually performing, and how much more needs to improve to meet globally set targets.

"What makes this Countdown paper different is that it doesn't just tell countries whether they're moving in the right direction — it tells them how far they still have to go, and against a benchmark that's actually within reach. That distinction between tracking trends and measuring performance is what turns a monitoring exercise into a tool for accountability," said Dr. Bianca Carducci, lead author.

Key Findings:

  • The study finds that, of 30 indicators, only one — mobile phone subscriptions, a proxy for connectedness and resilience — has been met by most countries. For 22 indicators, fewer than one third of countries will meet their global target or benchmark by 2030.
  • The indicator 'greenhouse gas emissions from food systems' has one of the largest gaps, with the global average 75% away from the target. No country in the world will meet the target at its current pace.

Most regions of the world would need dramatic annual changes to achieve 2030 targets. For example, Africa will require at least a 15-20% improvement across 23 indicators every single year, and Asia will have to cut food insecurity by over 63% every year. High-income regions are not exempt. In Europe, 19 indicators remain unattainable by 2030. The analysis also shows that some indicators are moving in the wrong direction, notably civil society participation, governmental accountability, ultra-processed food sales, agricultural water withdrawal, pesticide use and changes in emissions from food systems.

"Accountability for food systems transformation requires accelerated progress — without it, efforts risk becoming performative rather than transformative. We can no longer afford to continue at the present pace," said Dr. Mario Herrero, Professor, Ashley School of Global Development and the Environment, Cornell University.

Bright Spots Offer Hope

Despite the sobering picture for 2030, the study is not entirely bleak. For 7 of 33 indicators, at least a third of countries are already on track to meet the 2030 target. And half the indicators have been moving in a desirable direction at the global level. The study also offers the pace at which changes are required to achieve the targets by 2050, making progress feel achievable rather than impossible.

In some cases, regional and income benchmarks provide more realistic milestones that can motivate countries. For example, on average African countries are 58.7% away from the global benchmark for affordability of a healthy diet, but that gap narrows to 32.2% when measured against a regional benchmark set by the average of the top fifth of African countries.

"Bold global targets are vital for inspiring ambition. But they can become a source of inertia if they seem permanently out of reach. Therefore, regional and income-group benchmarks keep progress within sight and help identify the exemplar countries that can show others how it is achievable," said Dr. Jessica Fanzo, James Anderson Professor of Food Policy and Climate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies Europe.

Urgent Call to Accelerate Action

The study highlights the urgent need for accelerated action across all indicators. Priority actions should focus on indicators where progress is most off track, like food affordability, food insecurity, government effectiveness and food systems emissions. Food systems emissions change will require annual reductions exceeding 60%, which is challenging even for 2050.

"Food systems transformation is a shared responsibility. The governance indicators including government effectiveness, accountability and civil society participation are not just one category among five. They are the enablers. Improving them unlocks progress across the entire system," said Dr. Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Improving government effectiveness and accountability are the critical leverage points that interact with the largest number of indicators. However, the urgent need for transformation involves more concerted, creative and accelerated action from the global community that must recommit to achieving these targets by 2050, especially for those most vulnerable.

"The kind of comprehensive assessment that this Countdown study provides is critical for governments and all other partners to set priorities, direct investments and resources, and draft and redraft policies. Our global food systems demand urgent, decisive action — starting now," said Dr. Jose Rosero Moncayo, Chief Statistician and Director of the Statistics Division, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The 2026 Food Systems Countdown analysis gives every country a mirror, as well as a signpost for what needs to be done, in which direction and at what pace. The world owes it to the billions whose livelihoods depend on food systems, and the billions more who cannot afford a healthy diet, to act now, and to act fast.
