Maastricht University research finds that mealworm protein is as beneficial as milk protein

 Insect proteins offer the best of both worlds: extremely sustainable and great quality protein

Research by Maastricht University proves for the first time that insect protein is as beneficial as the 'gold standard' milk protein; both have the same performance on digestion, absorption and on the ability to stimulate muscle production. This outcome, published May 21st in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" [1], confirms mealworm-derived protein as a premium ingredient. Protifarm, leading Dutch AgriTech company, part of the world-leading group in natural insect protein, Ynsect, provided its Buffalo mealworm for this unique scientific research.

Milk protein (80% casein, 20% whey) is often seen as the gold standard. This research shows that the mealworm also contains all nine essential amino acids and is efficiently digested in the human body. In contrast, plant-based proteins often show an incomplete amino acid profile with low levels of essential amino acids.

"We used a unique isotope labeling approach to prove rapid digestion and effective stimulation of muscle protein synthesis following the ingestion of Buffalo mealworm. The observed response did not differ from the ingestion of a similar amount of milk protein," explained Prof. Dr.Luc van Loon, lead researcher.

Mealworm protein is the only one available on the market able to combine performance and health, but also naturalness and sustainability.

"Insects will truly be the next sustainable protein source that matches the quality of dairy and the sustainability of many plant-based alternatives," commented Tom Mohrmann, CEO of Protifarm.

"This study demonstrates once again the exceptional qualities of the mealworm. Intellicare partners with UnionBank to open fully digital ePaycard accounts for affiliated doctors

 

      Asalus Corporation (operating under the trade name "Intellicare"), one of the country's leading health maintenance organization (HMO), recently partnered with Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), renowned as the "best digital bank" in the country, for the ePaycard Digital Account Opening (eDAO) of its affiliated doctors to help speed up the disbursement of their professional fees, benefits, and other reimbursements. A virtual signing ceremony was held last May 14, 20201 to formalize the partnership agreement.

UnionBank offers an account opening facility that is efficient, paperless, and with a fully digital disbursement solution for the convenience of Intellicare affiliated doctors. To facilitate the opening of their accounts, the doctors will receive an SMS with a unique reference code which will be used to continue the application via the UnionBank Online App. Account opening will be a fully digital process which can be made at the doctor's own time and convenience. Upon Intellicare's approval, the ePaycard accounts will be opened real time.

The doctors' ePaycard accounts will automatically be enrolled in UnionBank Online and will be able to do digital transactions like Fund Transfer, Bills Payment, Save up for Goals, Split Bills, Buy Load, and many more.

UnionBank and Intellicare will be providing communication materials and hosting online onboarding sessions and webinars to educate the doctors on the features and benefits of eDAO and how to secure their online bank accounts.

Hertie School mourns the loss of former President Henrik Enderlein

Enderlein is remembered for his visionary leadership of our community and his unwavering enthusiasm for our students and alumni as a distinguished professor.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Henrik Enderlein, who served as President of the Hertie School until earlier this year and was a founding member of our faculty since 2005. Enderlein had been undergoing treatment for advanced cancer (melanoma) since August 2020. He was 46.

A distinguished scholar in the field of political economy, he embodied the spirit of our community through his tireless support for our students and alumni. We are immensely grateful to have benefited from his visionary leadership, his deep commitment to the field of governance and public policy, his insightful contributions to European public debate - and of course his singular wit and charm.

A staunch believer in the European project and an engaged advocate of greater collaboration across Europe, Professor Enderlein was the Director of the Jacques Delors Centre, a think-tank he founded in 2014.  Professor Enderlein was a prolific contributor to public debate and trusted sparring partner for many leaders across Europe.

In 2012/2013 he was the Pierre Keller Visiting Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. From 2006-2007 he was Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Duke University's political science department. In 2003, Professor Enderlein was awarded the Max Planck Society's Otto-Hahn Medal for outstanding achievements by young scientists. He completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, and degrees from Sciences Po in Paris and Columbia University in New York. Prior to his academic career, he was an economist at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt.

"Our thoughts are with Henrik's wife Isabelle and their four children. We mourn alongside them and offer our deepest sympathies," said Mark Hallerberg, Acting President. "Henrik's name is inseparably linked with the Hertie School. He was a visionary champion of our institution and of our mission to educate the next generation of leaders. The Hertie community has lost a dear friend and he will be greatly missed."

In many capacities, Professor Enderlein shaped our university from its earliest days and was a trusted advisor to previous our Presidents. He served as Associate Dean (2008-2012 and 2014-2017), Programme Director of the Master of Public Policy (2009-2012) as well as Programme Director of Executive Education (2007-2009). As President of the Hertie School from 2018-2021, Professor Enderlein initiated an ambitious and future-oriented plan to expand the university's research and teaching capacity, establishing five new Centres of Competence. As a faculty member, he was prolific in supporting the work of PhD researchers.

"The Hertie School's position as a leading public policy school is thanks to the leadership and vision of Henrik Enderlein," said Frank Mattern and Bernd Knobloch, Chairmen of the Hertie School Boards.

At the start of Professor Enderlein's tenure as President in 2018, the Hertie Foundation, the school's major donor, substantially increased its funding of the university. "Professor Enderlein's leadership of the Hertie School has made us proud to support this remarkable institution and its future," said Frank-Juergen Weise, Chair of the Board of the Hertie Foundation.

A private service will be held by Professor Enderlein's family. Details about how our community will honour his memory will be announced in the coming weeks.

A book of condolence will be available for signature and tributes in the main foyer of our campus at Friedrichstrasse 180 from 1 June. An online book of condolence is also available.

First Joint Exhibition by Taiwan's Golden Pin Design Awards and Thailand's DEmark Awards Showcases Sustainable Power of Design of the New Generation

      Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) collaborates internationally with Thailand for the first time to present 45 award-winning designs of Taiwan's Golden Pin Design Awards and Thailand's DEmark Awards under the theme of circular design, showcasing the sustainable power of design in both Taiwan and Thailand.

In recent years, abnormal environmental changes and climate change have made people aware of the depletion of the Earth's resources. From governments to private sectors, as well as from commercial activities to daily life, sustainable design has garnered the attention of the entire world. Thailand, which has long promoted circular and eco-friendly design, specializes in utilizing natural materials and resources for creative works, and has always demonstrated excellence in the area of sustainable design, consistently producing fun and novel designs that bring people inspirations in life.

In 2020, Thai design teams won as many as 19 awards at Taiwan's most representative and renowned Golden Pin Design Awards, displaying Thailand's impressive design power. In addition to being inspired by the principle of sustainability, these works also showcased the unique features of Thailand's local and regional products.

In addition to the physical exhibition, a design talk was also organized during the exhibition period. Consisting of three Taiwanese designers, Lance Han, Shikai Tseng, and Hung Hao-chun, and three Thai designers, Siriwan Chiwarak, Jirachi Tankijngawmong, and Twitee Vajrabhaya Teparkum, the panel discussed and explored the topics of "circular design," "product design," and spatial deign."

The designers opened the dialogues with experience in respective disciplines, and shared good sustainable designs from Taiwan and Thailand, allowing fellow panelists with different cultural backgrounds and life experiences to carry on the conversation and spark more inspirations of circular-friendly design.

The exhibition and seminar hoped to inspire citizens to really reflect in the face of the harsh facts of environmental and climate changes; as long as they started making little changes in their own daily lives, every single person could contribute some positive energy to the sustainability of the Earth.
