Measurements of Lower Temperature, Outdoor and Industrial Applications Achieve Greater Accuracy with Microchip's MCP990x Multi-channel Temp Sensor Family
Remote diode measurement with resistance error correction enables accurate readings of up to 20 inches away from the IC
Microchip Technology Inc. [NASDAQ: MCHP], a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced the MCP990X family of System Management Bus (SMBus) temp sensor ICs for monitoring of up to four channels in cold, outdoor and industrial low-temperature applications ranging from freezers and refrigerators to base stations and remote radio units. With +1 degree C maximum accuracy for both external and internal diode temperatures from -40 degrees C to +65 degrees C, these ICs provide a low-cost, highly flexible solution where precision is needed at lower temperatures.
Microchip's temp sensors for colder applications
Advanced features of the MCP990X family include remote diode temperature measurement with resistance error correction that compensates for voltage drops from connectors and long board traces, enabling accurate readings of up to 20 inches away from the IC. Injected system noise from components such as DC-DC converters and backlight inverters is also minimised with a sample-frequency hopping filter, allowing for easier placement and routing. The combination of these features with options for dual, triple and quad temperature monitoring provides for a wider range of measurement opportunities for an entire system with a single IC.
"Extending our thermal-management portfolio to include a focus on colder remote and industrial applications gives us a unique offering in the industry," said Bryan J. Liddiard, marketing vice president of Microchip's Mixed-signal and Linear Products Division. "These devices complement system designs for our extensive line of microcontrollers as well, helping to ease development time based on the sensing and processing needs of end products."
Compact package options that take up less silicon space on the PCB and allow for smaller system solutions and better product design for temperature critical applications include a 2x2 footprint for the MCP9902 dual channel temperature sensor. The IC is the smallest temperature sensor in Microchip's portfolio and 33 percent smaller than the company's previous generation dual temperature sensor. Additionally, a 3x3 footprint package is available for the MCP9903 triple and MCP9904 quad temp sensors.
Development support
Microchip has also introduced the MCP9902 Evaluation Board (part # ADM00615), to enable development with the MCP9902 low temp sensor. This board is available now from microchipDIRECT ( http://www.microchipdirect.com/ProductSearch.aspx?keywords=ADM00615 ) and any of Microchip's authorised worldwide distributors.

Microchip's LoRa(R) Wireless Module is World's First to Pass LoRa Alliance Certification; Ensures Interoperation of Long-range, low-power IoT Networks
- Stack-on-Board RN2483 named golden-unit reference module for all future certifications; makes it easy to tap the long range and low power of LoRa wireless networks
Microchip Technology Inc., (NASDAQ: MCHP) a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced that its RN2483 LoRa(R) module is the world's first to pass the LoRa Alliance's LoRaWAN(TM) Certification Program. The RN2483 module was independently tested by Espotel's accredited test laboratory to meet the functional requirements of the latest LoRaWAN 1.0 protocol specification, for operation in the 868 MHz license-free band. This ensures that designers can quickly and easily integrate their end devices into any LoRaWAN network. The LoRaWAN standard enables low-data-rate Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) wireless communication with a range of up to 10 miles, a battery life of 10 years, and the ability to connect millions of wireless sensor nodes to LoRaWAN gateways.

To learn more about Microchip's LoRa products, go to: http://www.microchip.com/LoRa---121715a . And, check out how easy the RN2483 module is to use, at Microchip's Embedded World booth (Hall 1: Booth 1-510).
"The launch of an accredited certification program is a key step toward the LoRa Alliance's mission to standardise an open specification for secure, carrier-grade, low-power wide area networks (LPWAN). We are proud to be the first and only company to have a module certified to the LoRaWAN 1.0 specification," said Steve Caldwell, VP of Microchip's Wireless Product Division and chair of the LoRa Alliance Strategic Committee. "This certification program will provide assurance to end customers that their application-specific end devices will operate on any LoRaWAN network, which is a crucial requirement for the global deployment of the IoT using LPWANs."
"Microchip was well prepared for certification testing, and Microchip's engineers had a very professional and meticulous approach during the test execution," said Jouko Nikula, the product owner of Espotel's LoRaWAN test services. "Espotel will also use Microchip's RN2483 module as a benchmark product when further developing the LoRaWAN certification, interoperability and performance testing in our test and research laboratory."
Before the certification program was launched, Microchip's LoRa development team had performed extensive verification and interoperability tests with all of the major LoRaWAN network infrastructure vendors, and so was already considered to be the golden unit within the LoRaWAN ecosystem. Peter Kaae Thomsen, CTO of the leading LoRa core network provider OrbiWise, confirmed that the RN2483 module has already been adopted as the reference device used for testing their UbiQ Network Solution.
Gartner predicts that there will be 25 billion connected things in use by 2020. While the IoT market is explosively growing, developers are challenged to establish a simple, robust infrastructure with their limited resources. They are demanding a solution that requires a minimum total cost of ownership and is easy to design, with short time to market, great interoperability and nationwide deployment. Microchip's 433/868 MHz RN2483 LoRaWAN module is a European R&TTE Directive Assessed Radio Module, accelerating development time while reducing development costs. Additionally, it combines a small module form factor of 17.8 x 26.7 x 3.0 mm with 14 GPIOs, providing the flexibility to connect and control a large number of sensors and actuators while taking up very little space.
The RN2483 module comes with the LoRaWAN protocol stack, so it can easily connect with the established and rapidly expanding LoRa Alliance infrastructure - including both privately managed local area networks (LANs) and telecom-operated public networks - to create Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) with nationwide coverage. This stack integration also enables the module to be used with any microcontroller that has a UART interface, including hundreds of Microchip's PIC(R) MCUs. Additionally, the RN2483 features Microchip's simple ASCII command interface for easy configuration and control.
The RN2483 module resolves the age-old wireless developer's dilemma, where they had to choose between longer range and lower power consumption. By employing LoRa technology, designers can now maximise both; while reducing the cost of additional repeaters. Additionally, the RN2483 provides them with the ability to secure their network communication using AES-128 encryption.
With its scalability, robust communication, mobility and the ability to operate in harsh outdoor environments, the RN2483 is well suited for a broad range of low-data-rate wireless monitoring and control designs. Example IoT and M2M applications include: smart cities (street lights, parking, traffic sensors), energy measurement (electricity/water/gas smart meters), and industrial/commercial/home automation (HVAC controls, smart appliances, security systems, lighting).

Microchip's new Digital-To-Analog Converters retain settings without power via integrated EEPROM
Low-power, 8-/10-/12-bit, single and dual-channel MCP48FXBXX families with SPI serial interface
Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced the expansion of its Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) product line with the MCP48FXBXX families of devices. The six-member MCP48FEBXX DAC family offers integrated EEPROM to save DAC settings at power-down, while the MCP48FVBXX family provides lower-cost alternatives for applications that don't require integrated memory. These low-power, single and dual-channel DACs feature 8, 10 and 12-bit resolution, a SPI serial interface, and are available in 10-pin MSOP packages. Examples of their wide range of applications in the consumer, industrial and automotive markets, among others, include set-point/offset trimming, sensor calibration, instrumentation, and motor control.

Microchip Continues Driving 8-bit MCU Evolution with Innovative New Development Platform
Development platform accelerates design of application functions using advanced peripherals available on 8-bit PIC (R)microcontrollers
Microchip Technology Inc. [NASDAQ: MCHP], a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced an expansion of the development platform for its growing portfolio of innovative 8-bit PIC(R) microcontrollers (MCUs) with Core-Independent Peripherals (CIPs). Designers can combine these building blocks to perform application functions autonomously, and they can be interconnected with an increasing amount of integrated Intelligent Analog peripherals. Because these functions are deterministically and reliably performed in hardware instead of software, CIPs enable system performance that is far beyond traditional MCUs.
In order to further reduce development time with these next-generation MCUs, Microchip is releasing version 3.0 of the MPLAB(R) Code Configurator (MCC) -- the most recent version of Microchip's free graphical programming environment -- and adding three new development boards. The Curiosity Development Board is an entry-level, cost-effective tool that includes an integrated programmer and debugger along with options for easy external connectivity. The Explorer 8 Development Kit is a rapid proof-of-concept tool with extensive integration, and it supports the widest variety of 8-bit PIC MCUs. The PICDEM(TM) Lab II Development Board is a comprehensive development and experimentation tool, with an analog and mixed-signal focus. This development platform, when combined with the core-independent peripherals, can significantly reduce total design time.
"For the last 20 years, most 8-bit MCU vendors have continued to release new products with essentially the same product feature approach," said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip's MCU8 Division. "Add memory, expand pin count, increase the clock speed, and add more of the same peripherals. But embedded system design has changed, and now even the smallest applications have increased in complexity. We evolved the peripherals on our 8-bit PIC MCUs to be more deterministic and autonomous, so our customers can react quickly to changing market conditions with minimal code rewrites and very short validation cycles."
All four of these tools are designed to fit within Microchip's longstanding and free MPLAB(R) X integrated development environment, and can be easily augmented via Microchip's rich ecosystem, including development partners such as MikroElektronika and Digilent. This platform enables designers to rapidly and intuitively bridge the evolved 8-bit PIC MCU peripheral architecture with their application software, making it even easier to build functions and applications.
MPLAB Code Configurator minimises start-up time by reducing burdensome datasheet research and code implementation, while the hardware CIPs eliminate the verification of functionality in complex control systems. Version 3.0 allows engineers to configure both individual peripherals and high-level system functions that combine several CIPs, in just a few mouse clicks. MCC 3.0 also adds support for Microchip's libraries, such as TCP/IP, custom LIN drivers, and serial bootloaders, with future expansion plans for mTouch(R) capacitive sensing, USB, and RF protocols. Additionally, Microchip plans to release a software development kit that will allow designers to add their own "often-used" 8- and 16-bit code snippets and/or libraries into MCC 3.0, for easy integration and configuration.
Curiosity is a cost-effective, fully integrated 8-bit development platform targeted at first-time users, makers and anyone seeking a feature-rich rapid prototyping board. It supports 8-bit PIC MCUs in 8-, 14- or 20-pin PDIP packages, and the board's layout and external connections offer full access to each MCU's core-independent peripherals. External connectors include a mikroBUS(TM) header that supports more than 100 of MikroElektronika's click add-on boards, as well as a PCB footprint that enables users to easily add Microchip's RN4020 Bluetooth(R) LE module for communication.
PICDEM Lab II is a development and teaching tool that gives users a large prototyping breadboard that enables them to easily experiment with different values and configurations of external analog signal conditioning and drive components for system optimisation. This flexibility eliminates the hassle and expense of building a custom PCB in the early stages of a project. The board is also modular, allowing users to design a system with one or several PIC MCUs, simultaneously. Off-chip connections can be made in any manner the user sees fit, and the off-board expansion possibilities include several industry-standard interfaces in addition to a system of configurable connectors. Connections include two MikroElektronika click board sockets, a 16-pin LCD module connector, and a 20-pin custom header for custom add-on boards. Microchip provides several labs to assist users in getting started quickly, ranging from simple MCU configuration to power conversion and Class D audio.
Explorer 8 enables a broad range of 8-bit MCU functions, including human-interface, power-conversion, Internet-of-Things, battery-charging and many other applications. It also has the greatest capacity for expansion in Microchip's 8-bit board lineup, with two Digilent Pmod(TM) interfaces, two MikroElectronika click board sockets, and two expansion headers for custom add-on boards that designers can create as their development needs change. Explorer 8 also supports Microchip's standard PICkit(TM) 3, MPLAB ICD 3, and MPLAB REAL ICE(TM) programmer/debuggers.
