Schindler Awarded the Largest Elevator and Escalator Contract by The Mall Group in Thailand

The Mall Group, Thailand’s prestigious mall operator, is investing over USD1.4 billion in the development of new world-class shopping centers across the country as well as in the revamping of existing malls in Bangkok. The move is prompted by the group’s vision of Thailand becoming a major retail and entertainment hub within the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which is to be implemented by the end of 2015. The group notably foresees annual tourist arrivals will significantly increase from 25 million currently to 40 million within 5 years.
Schindler was awarded a contract pertaining to five of these projects, namely, the development of The EmSphere, BLU PORT, BLU Pearl and Bangkok Mall, as well as the revamping of the Mall Korat.
When EmSphere is completed, the entire District EM in downtown Bangkok will host over 1,000 leading Thai and international brands. Also in Bangkok, located across the BITEC Convention Center in Bangna, a flagship Bangkok Mall project is set to become a city within the city, comprising business, residential and office space.
Elsewhere in Thailand, the Mall Group is developing two new projects under the BLU collection, BLU PORT in Hua Hin and BLU Pearl in Phuket, which will include a convention and exhibition center, a resort hotel and theme parks. Both shopping complexes are expected to become highly popular retail and entertainment destinations for Thais and international visitors alike.
Lastly, the revamping of the Mall Korat will see the existing mall revitalized, with retail space expanded to accommodate more dining venues and fashion addresses.
Overall, Schindler’s contract for these five projects encompasses 60 Schindler 5500 elevators, 212 Schindler 9300 AE escalators and 6 moving walks. The latest addition to the company’s product line, the Schindler 5500 embodies the next generation of elevators. Combining state-of-the-art engineering, energy efficiency and high performance, the elevator has set new industry standards, including a machine room-less version traveling up to 50 stories in 50 seconds.
Suwanna Kongkanjana, Managing Director of Jardine Schindler (Thai) Ltd., acknowledged the significance of this contract: “We are delighted that The Mall Group chose Schindler as their mobility partner for these landmark projects. It is an honor to contribute to such a tremendous expansion plan and we look forward to providing visitors with a comfortable, safe and pleasant ride.”
