Launch date: October 2, 2017; 79th WCD chapter
WomenCorporateDirectors (WCD) – the largest organization of women corporate board members globally – is launching its 79th chapter in Myanmar on October 2; Myanmar will be the 16th WCD chapter in Asia. With chapters across six continents, WCD has driven greater boardroom participation and engagement for women, including in countries in Asia with heavy imbalances in board gender representation.
WomenCorporateDirectors - A Foundation Inspiring Visionary Boards Worldwide
"The first Myanmar delegate participated in a WCD Institute in Tokyo in 2015, and it was then that WCD decided to launch a chapter in Myanmar because women business leaders are taking a larger role in running companies and carrying the reins of the large family businesses," says Susan Stautberg, WCD CEO and Chairman. "There is a real need for a network like WCD that can support these women, and women in the high-tech sector, who are emerging as leaders in the country."
Two of Myanmar's most prominent women directors – Nang Lang Kham and Nang Kham Noung (Marlene), of the KBZ Group, one of the largest privately held companies in Myanmar – will attend the launch as inaugural WCD members in the country, and KBZ is working with KPMG to sponsor the event. For the launch, WCD is also conducting a board training program for first-time directors.
As part of WCD's growing presence in Asia-Pacific, the group just hosted its ASPAC Institute in Hong Kong, drawing women corporate leaders from across the region, including Carrie Lam, Hong Kong's chief executive elected earlier this year and the city's first female chief executive.
