- The destiny of Chinese companies lies in the ownership of the core technology that drives the products they produce. Such ownership starts with the product's chip, the "heart" that powers most complete sets of equipment.
Hisense Group today announced the official availability of its smart television featuring the company's independently-developed SOC-level graphics engine chip. This marks another achievement following its launch of China's first independently-developed color TV chip in 2005, ending the era during which China had been dependent on third parties outside of the country for the color TV chip.
"The chip significantly improves the dynamic range of the LCD TV screen as well as the dynamic contrast ratio, color gamut, definition and fluency of movement. It is the result of the industrial production of core electronic devices, high-end generic chips and basic software in China," said Dr. Zhong Sheng, director of chip research and development at Hisense.
"A vendor without their own chips would always be a second-class vendor and cannot define its original products," said Zhou Houjian, chairman of Hisense Group. The latest chip product elevates Hisense to the status of a world-class vendor, making it a definer and leader of the world's television display technologies, in addition to Sony and Samsung. The company had already become one of the top three manufacturers in the global middle- and high-end television market.
High-end televisions are equipped with a master chip and a TCOM chip. With the prevalence of 4K and 8K chip sources and broadcasting and resolution needs of video streaming media, larger screens require graphics engine chips. The combination of the three chips can significantly improve the computing performance through interdependent and simultaneous operation. Hisense is the first Chinese company leveraging the three chips and independently developed the SOC-level graphics engine chip at production costs far lower than those of similar products in other countries, increasing its market competitiveness.
Dr. Huang Weiping, chairman of Hisense Hiview, revealed that the company's strategy is to optimize its LED business. The introduction of the graphics engine chip will further improve the core competitiveness of its previous best graphics engine product, the ULED. The company is expected to produce 1 million graphics engine chips during the first year. In addition to home applications, Hisense aims to introduce the graphics engine chip to the medical, drawing and movie monitoring sectors.
