LUI Che Woo Prize - Prize for World Civilisation Announces First Laureates

          The LUI Che Woo Prize - Prize for World Civilisation ("LUI Che Woo Prize" or "the Prize") today announced its first three laureates.

          The inaugural laureates of the LUI Che Woo Prize 2016 are:

          Prize Category 1: Sustainable development of the world (Sustainability Prize)
          Specific Area of Focus: World Food Supply: Safety and Security
          Laureate: YUAN Longping

          Professor Yuan Longping is awarded the Sustainability Prize for his scientific achievement in developing high-yielding hybrid rice, bringing about sustainable and stable food supply in China and other areas that have long suffered from the risks of famine. Professor Yuan's hybrid rice technology has contributed significantly to the enhancement of the security of world food supply.

          Prize Category 2: Betterment of the welfare of mankind (Welfare Betterment Prize)
          Specific Area of Focus: Treatment and/or control of epidemics, infectious diseases or chronic illnesses
          Laureate: Medecins Sans Frontieres

          Medecins Sans Frontieres ("MSF") is awarded the Welfare Betterment Prize for its indispensable contributions to the treatment and control of the cholera outbreak in Haiti in 2010 and the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014. MSF provides medical and humanitarian support to areas of disaster, epidemic or armed conflict. The work of MSF has thus resulted in a significant betterment of the welfare of mankind.

          Prize Category 3: Promotion of positive life attitude and enhancement of positive energy (Positive Energy Prize)
          Specific Area of Focus: Individuals or organisations whose behaviour and achievement inspire, energise and give hope to others
          Laureate: James Earl "Jimmy" CARTER

          Mr. Jimmy Carter is awarded the Positive Energy Prize for all the good work that he and The Carter Center that he established in 1982 have done, which has contributed significantly to the promotion of positive life attitude and enhancement of positive energy in the world. By bringing peace, prosperity, good health and hope to millions, and by fighting for human rights and a just society, Mr. Carter has inspired, energised, given hope and imparted positive energy to people around the world.

          Dr. Lui Che Woo, Founder & Chairman of the Board of Governors cum Prize Council of the LUI Che Woo Prize, said, "Today is an important milestone for the LUI Che Woo Prize - Prize for World Civilisation. The Prize was established with the aim to promote world peace, mutual respect and support, and create an environment where people can cherish and enjoy our Earth's precious natural resources. With the announcement of its first laureates, I hope we can build a caring and loving world."

          Dr. Lui expressed his hope that the three laureates may keep forging ahead in their respective fields, making their ideas and contributions universally accessible in order to benefit society and spread more positive energy to the world at large.

          Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Chairman of the Prize Recommendation Committee, said, "In contrast to other international Prizes with fixed fields, the LUI Che Woo Prize covers a variety of fields, and laureates are not limited to academics and scientists. The three laureates were selected following strict evaluation and assessment through the Prize's three-tier structure, a process that is all the more testament to the fact that each awardee is well deserved."
